Ladder Safety for Pest Control Technicians

Ladder Safety for Pest Control Technicians

A pest control route runs ten to fifteen stops a day, and most of them involve a ladder for three minutes. That ratio is exactly what makes ladder injuries common in the trade: short climbs, unfamiliar houses, wet grass and a tech in a hurry to make the next appointment.

Eaves, Soffits and Wasp Work

Paper wasps and mud daubers build under eaves, in soffits and behind shutters, which puts the work at 10 to 20 feet on a two-story house. A 24 foot extension ladder reaches most one-story eaves, and a 28 foot covers two-story rooflines and gable vents.

Our Werner 7120-2 Type IAA fiberglass extension ladder at $424 is the 28 foot ladder that handles the second story, and the extension ladder range has the 16 and 20 foot sizes for single-story work.

Fiberglass is also the safer choice around a service drop, and most DFW houses have one on the side where the wasps are.

Attic Hatches and Closet Access

Most attic access is a scuttle in a closet or a hallway, at 8 or 9 feet. A 6 foot stepladder is the right tool, and a Type IA fiberglass stepladder at $99 handles it with a tool bag on the top cap.

Never climb a shelf, a water heater or a stack of storage bins to reach a hatch. A Type IA fiberglass step stool at $97 lives on the truck for the low hatches and closet shelves, and it is cheaper than one urgent care visit.

Set the ladder outside the closet door where it can open fully, not inside a closet where the door hits the rails.

Roof Vents, Chimney Caps and Solar

Ridge vents, chimney caps and solar array edges are all pest entry points, and inspecting them means getting onto or beside the roof. That is a fall-protection decision, not just a ladder decision.

Keep the ladder three feet above the eave, tie it off where possible, and use AC19-2 ladder covers at $15.99 to protect gutters and paint. If the inspection requires walking the roof, a 50 foot fall protection kit at $89.38 is the minimum.

Carrying Equipment Up

A sprayer, a tool bag and a flashlight do not leave a hand free for the ladder. Carry up one item at a time, or hoist the bag on a rope once the tech is at the top.

Keep the load under the ladder's rating. A Type IA ladder is rated for 300 pounds, which covers a tech and a backpack sprayer, but not a tech, a sprayer and a full tool bag hanging off one side.

Heat, Solo Work and the Next Stop

Pest control is solo work in Texas heat, and a tech who falls in a backyard may not be found for an hour. Tell the office which stop you are on and check in before roof work.

Hydrate before the climb, not after. Heat illness shows up as bad judgment first, and bad judgment on a ladder is how the short three-minute climb becomes the injury that ends a route.

Second story, 28 feet: A two-story eave needs a 28 foot extension at a safe angle, not a 24.

One item per hand: Carry gear up one piece at a time or hoist it after the climb.

The Route Ladder

Pest control needs one ladder that covers most stops and one small ladder for the closets. A 28 foot fiberglass extension, a 6 foot stepladder and a step stool cover a normal DFW route without loading the truck down.

Tell us how many two-story homes are on your route and we will set the ladder list.
