Guide to Pump Jack Scaffolding for Exterior Renovations

A pump jack system is the standard way DFW crews work the full height of an exterior wall. Two poles go up, jack assemblies ride them, and a work bench between the jacks gives a platform that one person can raise continuously as the job moves up the wall - no rebuilding, no ladder moving, no waiting for a helper.

How the System Goes Together

Two poles set vertically against or near the wall carry everything. Jack assemblies clamp onto each pole and ride up as the crank is turned; a work bench spans between them and becomes the platform. One worker at the crank raises the whole platform a few inches at a time, which is what makes the system so fast on a tall gable.

The platform height is limited only by the poles. That is the core advantage over a ladder - a crew works a whole elevation from one setup instead of leapfrogging a ladder or building a tower at each stop.

It also works where a rolling scaffold will not. New-build siding means rough grade, and poles do not need a slab under them the way casters do.

The Parts That Decide Whether It Works

Pole feet and anchors are the base of everything. Our Werner pole foot at $9 each and the steel pole anchors in a four pack at $42 are what stop the poles kicking out under load. This is the cheapest part of the system and the one that decides whether the setup is safe.

The rigid support brace at $115 locks the bench to the poles so it cannot walk or lift, and the safety net at $370 catches tools and material before they reach the ground.

End rails matter at the edges of the platform. Our narrow end rail kit at $259 and wide end rail kit at $289 close off the ends of a bench, which is where the falls happen.

Titan and Werner, and Why You Cannot Mix

The two brands have different pole diameters and different jack assemblies, and the parts are not interchangeable. Pick one system and stay on it - a mixed setup is a setup that will fail at the worst moment.

The Titan aluminum pump jack at $244 is the lighter system and the one most siding and painting crews run. The Titan work bench at $129.36 and foldable brace at $71.50 complete it, with poles and connectors from $109.

The Werner side runs from the steel pump jack at $189 up to the aluminum jack at $272, with the aluminum work bench at $164. Steel is the heavier, cheaper option; aluminum is what crews who set up daily reach for.

Setting It Up Right

Pole length is set by the wall height plus enough to reach past the top of the work. Braces run from the pole feet at the base up through the support braces at working height, and the layout is what separates a system that works all day from one that fights you.

Before anyone steps on the bench: feet anchored, braces locked, end rails on, and the poles checked for plumb. Those four checks take a minute and they are the whole safety case for the system.
