Guide to Stepladder Height Selection
Guide to Stepladder Height Selection
The most common ladder mistake on a job site is buying by ladder height instead of working reach. A six-foot stepladder does not give you six feet of reach, and picking one size short means a crew standing on a step they should not be on. Here is the rule DFW contractors use, and what we keep on the floor at Dallas Ladder in Rowlett.
Ladder Height vs Working Reach
Working reach is what you can comfortably touch with both feet on a safe step and your hands overhead. For an average-height user, that works out to roughly four feet above the ladder height on a stepladder: a 4 ft stepladder gives about 8 ft of reach, a 6 ft gives about 10 ft, an 8 ft gives about 12 ft, and a 10 ft gives about 14 ft.
That is why an eight-foot ceiling does not need a 6 ft stepladder. It needs the 4 ft for paint touch-ups and the 6 ft for anything overhead and sustained. Buy for the top of the task, not the middle of it.
Rule of thumb: Stepladder working reach is about 4 ft above the ladder height for an average-height user.
Never do this: Stand on the top cap or the top step, or lean out past the rails to gain reach.
The Safety Rules That Decide It
Never stand on the top cap or the top step of a stepladder. On a platform or podium ladder, the platform is the standing surface and the handrail is there for support, which is why those models are the right answer when the work is overhead and slow.
Also match the duty rating to the work. Type I at 250 lb, Type IA at 300 lb, and Type IAA at 375 lb. Add the user, tools, and materials, then pick a rating with real margin above that total. Fiberglass is the default for anything near electrical work.
What We Stock in Rowlett
Our Louisville Type IA fiberglass stepladder and Type IAA version cover most commercial interior work, and the Werner Type IA fiberglass stepladder is the everyday option crews re-order. For quick work at low height, the Werner Type IA fiberglass step stool at $97 is the piece that keeps people off the top step.
