An extension ladder is a wear item with replaceable parts, and the parts that wear out first are predictable: the covers, the rungs, the shoes, and the rope. Covers and Rungs

Shoes, Rope, and Pulley

Feet and shoes are the most neglected parts on any ladder. A worn shoe is why a ladder slides on a smooth concrete slab, and it is a five-minute replacement. Rope and pulleys on extension ladders wear from the same grit that wears the shoes, so check the rope for fraying and the pulley for a wobble every time the ladder comes off the truck.

If the rope binds or the locks slip, stop using the ladder until the hardware is replaced. Extension ladders rely on those locks to hold the fly section, and a slipping lock is a fall in progress.

When to Replace the Ladder Instead

Covers, shoes, rungs, and rope are serviceable. Rails are not. A cracked, bent, or welded rail retires the ladder, as does exposed fiberglass fiber anywhere on the rail. That is the line, and it is worth marking the ladder and getting it off the truck the same day.
