Working at Height in Gyms, Sanctuaries and Auditoriums
Working at Height in Gyms, Sanctuaries and Auditoriums
Gymnasiums, sanctuaries and auditoriums share a shape: a very high ceiling over a very finished floor, with no wall close enough to lean a ladder against. The work up there is usually small, a speaker, a light, a fan, a repair to a truss, and the access is the whole job.
Ceilings With Nowhere to Lean
A sanctuary can run thirty feet to the ridge, a gym twenty-five to the deck, an auditorium more. No extension ladder reaches that at a safe angle, and there is nothing at that height to lean one against anyway.
That leaves two honest options: a rolling tower that puts a working deck at the elevation, or a stage and plank system hung or supported at catwalk level. Everything else is improvisation with a ladder, which is how facilities end up with a worker standing on the top cap of a stepladder.
The equipment decision is really a floor decision, because these buildings are the most finished floors a crew will ever work over.
Rolling Towers on Finished Floors
A rolling steel tower gets a deck to the work and moves with it. Our rolling steel scaffold tower starts at $849 and locks down solid once the casters are set.
Protect the floor as if the client is watching, because they are. Plywood under the casters spreads the point load, and locking every caster before anyone climbs is not optional on a floor that cost more than the tower.
Fit outriggers at $87.80 for the set of four when the tower goes above its base height. The narrow footprint that fits through a lobby door is exactly what makes a tall tower tippy without them.
Stages and Pick Boards for Catwalk and Lighting Work
Where the work runs along a ceiling rather than sitting in one spot, a stage system beats a tower because it covers a line instead of a point. Our stages and planks range covers aluminum pick boards from 12 to 24 inches wide.
A 24 inch by 16 foot aluminum stage at $673 is the long-span piece for lighting positions, and 7 foot aluminum planks at $129 each build the shorter runs between supports.
Read the rating on the board rather than assuming it. A 500 pound stage used as a span between two supports is rated for the load spread along the span, not for two workers and a toolbox in the middle.
Guard Rails at the Working Edge
Working ten feet up over a seating deck or a basketball floor means the deck edge is the hazard, not the height alone. The guard rail assembly at $147.70 turns an open edge into a working edge.
Add toe boards if anything can roll. A dropped wrench from a catwalk lands on a floor that people use, and the damage is not only to the floor.
On towers, the rails go up before the deck is used, not after the first trip up. Assembling the tower complete on the ground and then raising it is the sequence that keeps people off an unguarded deck.
Scheduling Around the Building
These are occupied buildings. Work gets done between services, after school, or during a shutdown, and the plan has to include keeping people out of the drop zone rather than just getting the crew up.
Barricade the footprint, lock the casters, and put a person on the floor if the building cannot be emptied. The tower is only as safe as the space around it.
Tower, not ladder: Above roughly 14 feet inside a building, the deck is the answer and a ladder is not.
Floor first: Plywood under casters, every caster locked, outriggers above base height.
High Ceilings Are a Different Discipline
Gyms and sanctuaries are where ladder habits fail quietly, because the ceiling looks reachable and the floor punishes everything. A tower, a stage system and a guard rail make the work ordinary.
Tell us the ceiling height, the floor, and whether the building can be emptied and we will size the access.
Everything ships from 5030 Dexham Rd. Ste. 103 in Rowlett, TX, and local crews can pick up the same day. Call 972-331-1090 and we will tell you what is on the floor right now.
