Guide to Scaffolding Outriggers, Casters and Guard Rails

A scaffold frame is the structure. Outriggers, casters and guard rails are what make it safe to work from and safe to move. These are the parts crews skip when they are trying to save money, and they are the parts that decide whether a tower stands up. Dallas Ladder stocks all three at our Rowlett warehouse.

Outriggers Widen the Base

Outriggers extend the footprint of the tower beyond the frame, which is what stops a tall narrow tower from tipping. The taller the tower, the more the base width matters, and a tower that is stable at ten feet can be a hazard at twenty.

Our set of four outriggers for Baker/Perry scaffolding is the standard addition once a tower goes up more than a couple of levels.

Casters Make It Move, and Also Make It Tip

Casters turn a fixed tower into a rolling one, which saves enormous time on a long wall or a warehouse run. They also raise the base and put the whole tower on four small contact points, which is why a rolling tower needs to be built lower than a fixed one and why the casters have to be locked whenever anyone is on the platform.

Caster rating matters as much as caster count. Four casters rated for a light load will fail under a heavy crew even though there are four of them. Our 5 inch locking caster wheels are what we pair with our frame sets.

Guard Rails Are the Primary Protection

On a scaffold platform, guard rails are not a nice-to-have sitting alongside a harness. They are the primary fall protection, because they stop the fall rather than catching it. A platform without them is a platform nobody should be standing on.

A complete guard rail setup includes a top rail, a mid rail, and toe boards if anything on the deck could be knocked off. Our guard rail assembly for Baker/Perry scaffolding covers the standard tower.

Fixed tower: Add outriggers once you go past a couple of levels.

Rolling tower: Build lower, use rated casters, and lock them before anyone steps on.

Checking the Whole Tower

These parts work as a system, and adding one without the others is how a tower ends up technically equipped and actually unsafe. A rolling tower with no guard rails and no outriggers is still a liability on four wheels.

Our Baker/Perry scaffold unit comes with casters as a starting point, and frame sets give you a matched tower to build from.

Everything ships from 5030 Dexham Rd. Ste. 103 in Rowlett, TX, and local crews can pick up the same day. Call 972-331-1090 and we will tell you what is on the floor right now.
