Guide to Scaffold Inspection Checklists
Guide to Scaffold Inspection Checklists
OSHA requires that every scaffold be inspected by a competent person before each work shift and after anything that could affect its stability. On a Texas job site that second condition shows up more often than crews expect: wind, a truck backing into a leg, or a platform that got overloaded the day before. Dallas Ladder stocks the frames, guard rails, and outriggers DFW crews inspect and replace.
Before Every Shift
Walk the scaffold and check the footing first. Base plates or mud sills under every leg, on ground that has not softened overnight, and no legs sitting on blocks, bricks, or loose lumber. Then check the frames: no bent legs, no cracked welds, no missing cross braces or pins.
Next is the platform. Every platform unit must be fully planked with no gaps wide enough to drop a tool through, and planks should be secured against movement. Check the guardrails at 38 to 45 inches with a midrail, and toe boards where materials or tools are staged. Finally, check the access: a proper ladder or stair tower, not a frame rung climb.
Inspect every shift: Footing, frames, cross braces, platform planking, guardrails, toe boards, and access.
Replace, never repair: Bent frames, cracked planks, worn casters, and missing outriggers or guard rails.
The Parts That Fail Most
Locking casters and outriggers take the most abuse on mobile setups. A caster that no longer locks turns a stable tower into a rolling hazard, and a missing outrigger is what tips a Baker scaffold during a reach. Both are inexpensive parts, which is why replacing them the day they fail is the right call.
On frame scaffolds, the failures we see are bent frames from being tossed off a truck, missing guard rails that were borrowed for another job, and planks with cracked end hooks. Our guard rail assembly for Baker/Perry scaffolding at $147.70 and set of four outriggers at $87.80 are the two items that get a Baker unit back in service, and the 5 inch locking caster wheels at $21.50 each are a same-day fix.
Replacing What Fails
Frames and platforms are not field-repairable. A bent leg gets replaced, not straightened, and a plank with a cracked hook gets retired. Keep one spare frame set and one spare platform on the truck during a long project; it is cheaper than a lost day.
Our 5 ft x 6 ft 4 in S-style double ladder frame set at $126.40 and the Baker/Perry jobsite scaffolding line cover most of what we see on DFW commercial work. Pickup at 5030 Dexham Rd. Ste. 103 in Rowlett, TX, or delivery across the Metroplex. Call 972-331-1090.
