Baker Scaffolding: 5 Tips for DFW Pro Crews
Maximizing Safety and Stability on Mobile Scaffolding Towers
Baker-style scaffolding, also known as Perry scaffolding, is a staple on DFW commercial jobsites for a reason: it is incredibly versatile. Whether you are finishing drywall in a high-ceiling lobby or installing HVAC ductwork, these mobile towers provide the reach and platform space you need to work efficiently.
At Dallas Ladder, we provide pro-grade Baker Scaffolding Sets designed for daily use. To keep your crew safe, follow these essential jobsite protocols.
1. Always Lock the Casters
It sounds simple, but many accidents happen because a worker tries to climb the tower before all four wheels are locked. Before stepping onto the first rung, ensure the locking mechanisms are fully engaged to prevent the tower from shifting.
2. Respect the Load Capacity
Most standard Baker sets are rated for 1,000 lbs. While this sounds like a lot, that weight includes the user, their tools, and all materials. If you are stacking heavy buckets of joint compound or masonry supplies, monitor your total weight to avoid structural strain.
3. Never Move the Scaffold with Workers on Top
OSHA is strict about this: the tower must be unoccupied before it is moved. Trying to "scoot" the scaffold while standing on the platform is a leading cause of tipping. Get down, move the tower, lock the wheels, and then resume work.
4. Use Guardrails on High Towers
If you are stacking units to reach higher ceilings, guardrails are mandatory. We stock specific guardrail kits in Rowlett that attach easily to our Baker units, providing the fall protection required for commercial site approval.
5. Maintain 3 Points of Contact
Treat the end frames like a ladder. When climbing up to the platform, always maintain three points of contact. Keep the platform clean and free of debris to prevent trip hazards while you work.
